09 May 09 - ATASA

We have created ATASA to be the parent body for the members of The Guide and VISA.org.za to use and grow into an interactive community for tourism in Southern Africa. ATASA stands for Alternative Travel Association for Southern Africa. We need to design a logo for the organisation so any ideas are welcome from all.
Email: logo@theguide.org.za for ideas & suggestions.

01 May 09 - Volunteering

On the 1st of May we re-launched our volunteering site called VISA.org.za.

Volunteering in Southern Africa (VISA) offers information on travel, your volunteer visa, health and safety and lists organisations in various countries around Southern Africa. If you are already in a program or working on a project you are more than welcome to submit their/your details for addition to the site. Email: info@visa.org.za

16 April 09 - Happy Searching

The Guide has built a new Backpackers Search Engine. We will be using this (and hopefully you to) to list all backpackers, activities, tours, transport and volunteering in Southern Africa. This will make searching for places while traveling easy and to the point. We hope you absolutely love it and find it useful. You are welcome to give us feedback on facebook. To check it out go to theguide.org.za/google - Please encourage all backpackers you stay at to use it and add it as their home page :) Thanks

DAY 1

Travel from Cape Town or Stellenbosch to Hermanus
via a township, wine estates and scenic mountain
passes.

Kayamandi Township - A vibrant township tour where you will enjoy the spirit of African hospitality.

Wine Tasting - We visit beautiful wine farms, each with its own character and specialities. Learn more about the local wines and experience the unique Cape Dutch architecture with the dramatic backdrop of the Stellenbosch mountains.

Franschhoek - The gourmet capital of South Africa
celebrates its 17th century French Huguenot origins. The
charming main street is dotted with quaint shops, alleries,
street-cafes and restaurants offering the perfect lunch stop.

Franschhoek Mountain pass
- Some of the most beautiful scenery off the beaten track.

Hermanus - The world’s most exciting land-based
whale-watching venue (seasonal from Jun to Nov). A laid-back seaside town with excellent seafood restuarants.

DAY 2

The brave of heart can join the optional shark cage
dive, or enjoy the morning in Hermanus. Returning
via Betty’s Bay and the Kogelberg Biosphere back
to Cape Town or Stellenbosch.

Gansbaai - Cage diving with the great white sharks.
(optional with extra cost)

Betty’s Bay - At Stoney Point in Betty’s Bay we get close
to the African penguins.

Kogelberg Bioshere
- This spot is one of the best natural
showrooms for the diversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom.
This UNESCO World Heritage site has one of the richest
areas with more plant species than many countries.

Clarence drive
- This coastal road back towards Cape Town winds between the ocean and the Kogelberg mountains, passing seaside villages of wild beauty and rugged mountain scenery.
